The mission of Camp Care-A-Lot is to have a positive impact on the life of a child through a camping experience. Camp Care-A-Lot is a non-profit organization founded by local individuals and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our vision is to help create strong leaders, responsible citizens, productive members of society and caring adults; because we believe that all kids are capable of success “no exceptions”. Camp Care-A-Lot provides a FREE service to children (and agencies who refer children) who may be abused, neglected, in despair, angry, homeless, or experiencing conflict and who are from economically challenged families. Unique opportunities to build moral and social values to become productive citizens are provided during their week at camp.
Camp Care-A-Lot offers children (ages 6-10) from low or no income families to attend our residential camp, focusing on educational issues, teambuilding, conflict/anger management, leadership, making appropriate choices, and academics. Children and their staff mentors sleep in dorms, eat daily nutritious meals and snacks, go swimming, do arts and crafts (making jewelry, decorating shirts, picture framing, tie dyeing, and sand sculptures), hike, and have campfires and entertainment.
Camp Care-A-Lot impacts children by providing them with the knowledge and skills to build positive self-worth; make socially and educationally appropriate decisions; and set goals for their future. Children need to experience and take ownership of living a life of HOPE and the promise of SUCCESS and that is what Camp Care-A-Lot provides them while at camp and into their teen years. We are a haven for children who otherwise would not be able to experience a safe and nurturing opportunity to live and learn together with people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs, while still having similar concerns, emotions and experiences. Children must know they are not alone in their feelings and that their feelings are valid and important.
Camp Care-A-Lot seeks to have children complete their camp session by adopting our core values of respect, responsibility, kindness, trust, teamwork and listening. The objective is to "Teach children to care about themselves and others, their country, community and their environment and to let them know that people care about them". Citizenship, leadership and teamwork are stressed in each activity. Taking responsibility for their own actions and attitudes, and self-esteem building is another goal. We address conflict resolution, respect, making appropriate decisions, motivation to stay in school, staying away from gangs, and volunteerism through diverse activities. Camp is a unique opportunity to experience living and socializing with groups of other children and adults in a nurturing and risk-free setting.
“Grandparents Day” is a phenomenal opportunity during the week of camp for campers to partner with local volunteer seniors, learning that children can give without having to have money. The senior partners for the day encourage brainstorming in our Kids at Hope™ activity --- discussing and drawing what HOPE and SUCCESS mean. Campers will work together with their honorary Grandparent on a special activity where they discuss goals for the future of the children and how the campers can take steps toward reaching their goals.
Our belief system coincides with Kids at Hope™, a special program which teaches children that they can set goals and achieve them if they strive every day to reach their goals. The statement, "All Children are Capable of Success, No Exceptions!", is “owned” by every staff member and camper!
